Animals of the Bible

Animals of the Bible

by Dorothy P. Lathrop, Helen Dean Fish (Text selection)
Publisher: HarperCollins
Hardcover, 60 pages
Price: $17.99

This is not a story, but it is a picture book. The KJV passages of scripture are followed by majestic black and white illustrations of animals and the people around them. Lathrop's animals are well researched, and her settings and people are accurate to the time period. Helen Dean Fish selected the excerpts, and the book includes some extra passages with no pictures.

The text is simply scripture, which is somewhat surprising considering it won the first Caldecott medal in 1938. The fact that Caldecott is an award for distinguished illustration has typically meant that the books don't skew as liberal as, say, the Newbery Awards. And Animals of the Bible is certainly a better start to the award's history then the Newbery's first, Story of Mankind.

Awards aside, Animals of the Bible is a true classic. The slow pace may seem foreign to modern children used to faster, more visually stimulating picture books. But it's the kind of slow pace that becomes engrossing. We encourage it as a wholesome read aloud, or for reading alone. Either way, children will be reading the Bible for fun, and marveling at God's creation.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
