Focusing on God's hand in American history, The American People and Nation introduces kindergartners not only to American history but to the study of history in general. Beginning with Genesis 1:1 and a definition of history, the text takes kids all the way to the 20th century.

How Does This Work?

There are nine chapters in the consumable student text. While some kids will be able to read the text themselves, many will need to have it read to them. There are some pretty big words due to the subject matter (constitution, independence, etc.), but overall the writing is accessible for 5-year-olds (as are the many black and white illustrations).

A variety of activities and exercises are included for students to complete in the book. Most of them are written, though there is a dot-to-dot, a space to draw a picture, etc. The teacher's manual includes background information and lesson plans for each chapter. Information that students especially need to learn is focused on and suggestions are provided for presenting both the material in the book and that contained in the teacher's manual. Two detailed maps—one of the United States and one of the world—are included in the back.

This isn't simply a history text. While that is the focus, there is information about the United States system of government, geography, map studies, and civics. Everything is presented within a strong Christian context, and there is emphasis on the Christian worldview inherent in our country's origins. At the back of the student text are lists of words the student should know from each chapter: most have a Christian or patriotic theme.

OurHonest Opinion:

This is overall a good introduction for young kids. Some of it may be over their heads after an initial reading, but if you discuss it with them they should be able to understand. There isn't much in-depth information, but how much does a kindergartner really need to know about the French and Indian War? Due to the amount of information, however, some parents may prefer to use this for first graders.
