All-of-a-Kind Family

All-of-a-Kind Family

by Sydney Taylor, Helen John (Illustrator)
Publisher: Yearling
Mass market paperback, 189 pages
Price: $7.99

Author Sydney Taylor grew up among immigrant families on New York City's Lower East Side prior to World War I and wrote the All-of-a-Kind Family stories for her daughter. Based on her childhood, these charming books capture the everyday life of a home with little money but lots of love and good times to share.

This is the first book in a series of five that tells the story of a Jewish family in pre-WWI New York, in the years from 1912 to 1919. Join Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte and Gertie as they enjoy life in their wonderfully described surroundings.

Each book (in fact, nearly every chapter) stands alone as a delightful story by itself. We found it impressive that after over 1300 reviews on GoodReads.com, these retain a rating of more than 4 stars. Obviously, they are family favorites for many besides us!

Here are the rest of the titles in the series:

Book #2: All-of-a-Kind Family Downtown
Book #3: More All-of-a-Kind Family
Book #4: All-of-a-Kind Family Uptown
Book #5: Ella of All-of-a-Kind Family

This is a delightful book that can be read aloud and enjoyed by the whole family! It focuses on the life of a poor Jewish family with five girls living in New York. Each chapter could stand alone as one of their adventures, but there is also an over-arching plot with some fun twists and surprises.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and heartily recommend it.
