Born in a log cabin on the Kentucky frontier, Abraham Lincoln faced a life of extreme poverty and hardship. Often shoeless and poorly clothed, he was barely able sheltered against the bitter elements and even spent a winter in an open lean-to. From an early age, Abe was required to help his father with back-breaking physical labor—plowing and hoeing, fence making and splitting rails. There was always more work to do and little time for education. As a result, Abe was forced to school himself, reading whatever and whenever he could.
But Abe Lincoln surmounted these and many other barriers, all the while keeping his gentle nature and his sense of humor. Here is the story of a man who rose from a background of poverty to attain the highest office in the land.
