A. L. Rowse

A. L. Rowse has achieved his present standing as the leading historian of the Elizabethan Age with such works as The England of Elizabeth, The Expansion of Elizabethan England and The Elizabethans and America. Other volumes of original research in the period are his biography of Sir Richard Grenville of the Revenge, Tudor Cornwall: Portrait of a Society and Sir Walter Ralegh.

Mr. Rowse has written a history of the Churchill family in two volumes, The Early Churchills and The Churchills, as well as a number of interpretative works, including The Spirit of English History and The English Spirit. He is also the author of an autobiography, A Cornish Childhood, essays on literature and politics, and several volumes of poetry, notably Poems Chiefly Cornish and Poems Partly American.

Mr. Rowse was born in Cornwall, is a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Huntington Library in California, where this book was written. He divides his time between Oxford and his home in Cornwall, with frequent visits to the United States.
