The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Both young and old immediately associate the year 1812 with with fierce battles on land and sea. The historical importance of the war spread far beyond the battles won and lost between the United States and England, however. What is revealed in this book is the relationship between the War of 1812 and the fundamental forces of change—political, social, industrial, and scientific—that were causing other forms of revolution in America, England, France, and elsewhere.

History is presented in its most dramatic form in this short, exciting book. The chronology of the war, colorful descriptions of the battles on land and sea are all here, but there is much more. For the author gives us vivid descriptions of what life was like during this period in both the United States and in parts of Europe; the interlocking events that led up to the war; and effect of Napoleon's rise to power on France and the rest of the world.

1812: The War and the World is an unusual book, not only because it succeeds in translating fact into a suspense story without sacrificing accuracy, but also because the author's panoramic view places the events of the war in a broad historical context.
