Veritas Omnibus III

From the landing on Plymouth Rock to the start of the postmodern era, Omnibus III plunges head-long into Modern Times, analyzing not only our own American history, but crucial events such as the French Revolution, the Communist movement, and the World Wars. The Primary booklist for this year includes foundational American documents like the Federalist and Anti-federalist papers and the Constitution, the ideas of evil geniuses like Marx’s Communist Manifesto and Hitler’s Mein Kampf, as well as novels like Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities and Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The secondary booklist includes classics like the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Frankenstein, the biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Charles Finney, as well as powerfully informative works like Gene Veith's Postmodern Times and Francis Schaeffer's How Should We Then Live? For each book, there is an introductory essay explaining the background and basic ideas of the book. This is followed by daily sessions the student can work thorough, consisting of questions, activities, and assignments that help the student learn to understand and communicate ideas thoroughly, eloquently, and from a solid Christian worldview.

Omnibus I dealt with Ancient times and the many pagan worldviews represented in works from that era. Omnibus II was a study of the history of the church of the Middle ages, reading works written by Christians in a Christian society. Omnibus III explores an era different from the previous two, an era that is neither primarily pagan nor primarily Christian, but a post-Christian society devastated by wars and violence. The works studied this year, written both by Christians and false teachers, hit close to home, as the authors wrote and lived in times closely preceding and directly influencing our own. This is a hugely important period in history to become familiar with and understand. The philosophies and ideas studied in this year are ones that our current culture still entertains and continues to develop, and they must be evaluated and held up to the light of scripture. This is an intense year, but a crucial one; one that will continue to grow your students in their understanding of the world around them and their devotion to God and his the truth of his word.
