An outspoken theologian, Stanley Hauerwas has boldly written and spoken extensively on issues such as pacifism, patriotism, and ethics. Born in 1940, Hauerwas graduated from Yale Divinity School and also holds degrees from Yale University and Edinburgh University. Known for his opinionated presentations of his views, Hauerwas also has a reputation for being laid back, full of many a quip, and deeply concerned for the virtue and character of the church. His writings are in fact generated largely by the latter, and range from commentaries such as Matthew to other works like Sanctify Them in Truth and With the Grain of the Universe. Although a longtime member of the United Methodist denomination, Hauerwas has since professed his affiliation with the Anglican Church. Hauerwas is currently a professor at Duke Divinity School as well as Duke's law school.
