The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Excerpted from the introduction:

The Rainbow Dictionary contains 2300 entries, consisting of 2000 main entries and related forms, which children use in speaking and recognize when reading. The words chosen are those that occur most frequently in a consolidation of eight word lists for children from five to eight years old. Five of these word lists are standard published lists; one is from the unpublished research of the author Wendell W. Wright; and two were made expressly for this publication under Mr. Wright's direction. Of the last two, one was based on the most commonly read children's books, the other on an analysis of the comic pages of standard Sunday newspapers sampled over a period of one year.

The vocabulary of The Rainbow Dictionary which finally evolved from this extensive research is thus based almost entirely on frequency. This strict adherence to frequency in determining the choice of words was felt to be by far the best and most practical system for a children's dictionary.
