Madeleine Polland

Born in the south of Ireland in 1918, Polland's family moved to England to avoid the fighting during the Irish Rebellion. With three brothers and two sisters, Polland enjoyed her childhood as a tomboy. Later her art interests motivated her to consider becoming a clothes designer, but with the onset of illness in her mother, Polland chose to stay home and tend her. For employment, she secured a position in the local library and helped rebuild their book collection. Then during World War II, she joined the war effort and worked at a radar installation. After the war she married and had two children. With her interest in history and with her children providing her with plots and ideas, Polland took a friend's suggestion that she write children's books. Traveling to places to gain insights and understanding, Polland's works have authenticity, bringing her success as a writer. Today she lives and writes from her home in Spain.
