Klutz Toys & Books

Klutz, Inc. started in Palo Alto, California, in 1977 by three Stanford graduates looking for a way to make a quick dollar. The trio included John Cassidy, Darrell Lorentzsen, and B.C. Rimbeaux. Their success with selling sidewalk juggling lessons and handmade bean bags didn't make them enough money to buy that island they wanted. But when Cassidy put the juggling lessons in book form called Juggling for the Complete Klutz, Lorentzen formed a business plan, and Rimbeaux secured them a business loan, suddenly a career began forming. The how-to, multi-sensory books caught the attention of adults and children by allowing readers to interact with items in the books, a novelty before Klutz came along.

With a plethora of activities to choose from in book form, Klutz offers the Klutz Book of Knots, Cat's Cradle, and Drawing for the Artistically Undiscovered, among many others. With a sense of humor, wise business sense, and imagination, Klutz founders have made the company's products available to people in twenty-four countries around the world. Acquired in 2002 by Scholastic Inc., Klutz is still a brand-name recognized for making learning fun.
