  Dated, but Then...

Confession: sports narratives put me to sleep. Its literally beyond boring to me and I only read about 2/3 of this book. The fact that the author had enough talent to keep me reading that long, is why it gets four stars. The fact that every white character in the book is a jerk is why it only gets three of them. The story of a black baseball player, its your basic life-when-it-was-okay-to-act-like-a-jerk-if-you-were-white plot. Well written, and accurate, but one-dimensional (and, obviously, dated) when it comes to race issues, so more reading on the subject is HIGHLY advised.
