J. E. A. Tyler

British-born in October of 1943, Tyler often went by the first name of Tony.  He stuttered, and this prevented him from gaining employment as a police officer.  Turning to reporting instead, Tyler stowed away on a ship to Germany in order to see the Beatles and do a bit of research about them.  He then joined the army only to buy his way out, and that of a couple of friends, with money from an inheritance.  Meandering to Italy, he played as a musician in a band before returning to England.  Tyler worked as a publicist for EG Management and then wrote for NME, New Musical Express.  Using his knowledge about the Beatles, he co-authored The Beatles:  An Illustrated Record.  Under the name of JEA Tyler, his initials, he penned The Tolkien Companion and The Complete Tolkien Companion.  Very shortly after receiving a diagnosis of cancer, Tyler passed away on October 28, 2006, with the regret that he wouldn't see his godson, the actor Daniel Craig, play the role of James Bond.
