Teach your children useful life skills with short and simple handicraft lessons!
Charlotte Mason intentionally included handicrafts in her school schedule. She believed that “another elemental relationship, which every child should be taught and encouraged to set up, is that of power over material. Every child makes sand castles, mud-pies, paper boats, and he or she should go on to work in clay, wood, brass, iron, leather, dress-stuffs, food-stuffs, furnishing-stuffs. He should be able to make with his hands and should take delight in making” (Vol. 3, p. 80).

Cardboard & Paper
- Scissors
- Pen or pencil
- Ruler
- One-hole punch (optional, but recommended)
Materials
- An envelope
- A few sheets of decorative paper or calendar pictures
- Three medium-weight cardboard boxes, such as medium size Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes OR Two medium-weight cardboard boxes and one heavy-weight (corrugated) box, approx. 11 1/2″ x 13″ each
- Ten or twenty blank sheets of 8 1/2″ x 11″ copy paper
- String or yarn
- Five large cereal boxes (empty)
- Two 8 1/2″ x 11″ sheets of card stock paper
- Adhesive tape or glue
- Plastic drinking straws or wooden popsicle sticks
- Decorative supplies, such as paints, stickers, markers,crayons, etc.
- Two paper towel tubes or a stack of small paper cups
