Story of Jumping Mouse

Story of Jumping Mouse

A Native American Legend

by John Steptoe
Publisher: HarperCollins
Trade Paperback, 40 pages
Price: $6.99

A young mouse is bent on difficult journey; a migration from his brush home, across the desert to the far-off land only legends tell about. Aided by Magic Frog, who gives the mouse strong legs for jumping, the newly-named Jumping Mouse perseveres on his quest. He is tempted with idleness, frightened by predators, but manages to escape these dangers.

But his real test of character comes when he meets other animals in need. A bison who has been blinded begs for his help, and the little mouse, with the magic given to him by Magic Frog, gives him his eyesight—at the cost of his own. Not only does Jumping Mouse help the bison in this way, he also helps a wolf by giving him his sense of smell. When he finally reaches the land beyond the desert, the selfless mouse is left with nothing but his senses of hearing and touch. But to his rescue comes the Magic Frog, who in reward for Jumping Mouse’s courage and selflessness makes him into one of the most powerful animals of all—the Eagle.
