A native of Portland, Oregon, Bonnie Henderson grew up in a family of avid hikers and skiers. While studying English in college, Henderson discovered her love of journalism, and began writing freelance. She did reporting and editing full time for
Seaside Signal and
Sunset magazines before switching to freelance writing, which she does for various recreation-related journals like
Women's Sports and Fitness and
Backpacker. Henderson's passion for the outdoors has brought her variety of non-journalistic jobs from guiding whitewater rafting excursions to ski instruction. Her knowledge of Oregon's mountains and coasts has resulted in her guides
Best Hikes With Kids: Oregon and
Day Hiking Oregon Coast. Henderson's latest work,
Strand, details her findings on Mile 157 of the Oregon coast as a volunteer with Coastwatch. Henderson makes her home in Eugene, Oregon.
