The woodland animals think they are prepared for winter. The jays and robins can always get worms. The squirells have stored nuts and acorns under logs and leaves. The deer have plenty of grass. But the geese are flying south for the winter. The geese know.
One night a rainbow circles the moon. The next morning everything is covered in snow. Now the animals can't find their food. They are hungry, and the winter will be long. What will they do?
Perhaps the kindness of an old couple will help them survive....
This surprisingly touching Caldecott winner gives humanity to the woodland animals of New England. They're referred to as Mr. or Mrs., and their dialogue is actually quite funny. This lends a great deal of compassion to the animals as they start to go hungry, and makes the old couple's act of kindness inspiring.
The artwork isn't flashy but realistic and quietly charming. This is a perfect addition to winter and Christmas reading lists every year that will perhaps motivate children to set out food for the animals in their own backyards.
