Usborne First Thousand Words

Each of the Usborne First Thousand Words books provide a treasury of learning opportunities which appeal to a wide age range. They are exciting talk-about books for very young children just starting to say their first words, stimulating picture-word books for pre-readers, and lively sources of ideas and spellings for beginning writers.

Stephen Cartwright's illustrations are full of amusing details for hours of valuable entertainment and constructive enjoyment. Panoramic pictures of everyday scenes are surrounded by small pictures with their names printed beneathin the language the book is teaching. For languages that use non-Roman alphabets (like Chinese and Arabic), each word is also written with Roman letters to aid pronunciation. The association of words and pictures provides a simple and effective way to learn new vocabulary, while the panoramic scenes provide opportunities for talking about the pictures and forming simple sentences.

At the back of each book is a list of all the words with their pronunciation guides and meanings in English; for languages with unique alaphabets, there is also a guide to that alphabet.
