SRP Frequently Asked Questions
(Looking for contest rules? Click here.)
I'm not local. Can I still have my child participate?
Yes! The summer reading program is open to kids all over the world.
Is this open to teenagers?
Yes! The challenge is open to kids between grades 1-12. High-schoolers are encouraged to participate.
How do I get updates on when to sign up, when to turn in booklogs, and when the prize drawing is?
When you sign-up for the program you are automatically added to our summer reading email list. Make sure you have a valid email address listed in your account information.
Why do I have to pay to enter this reading program, when other programs are free?
Good question! Because we're not government-funded like some library reading programs, we've had to implement this entry fee to help us keep the program running. Here's a short explanation of how it works: You, the parent, are essentially betting us five dollars that your child will read five books from our booklist this summer. Easy-peasy, right? When your child reads the minimum number of books and fills out the booklog before the cutoff date you get your money back in the form of a gift certificate to our store. If at any time before the cutoff date you decide not to continue with the program we will refund your money. However, if your child achieves the higher reading goals they'll be eligible for much bigger prizes. We're happy that we've found a way we can offer this great program while still being able to support ourselves, and we appreciate your patience, understanding, and most importantly, your participation!

Will there be author readings and events in the store?
Yes! We are hoping to kick off some events in our store this summer for local readers to participate in. Information about in-store events will be sent in our Summer Reading newsletter and on our Facebook page.
How do I use the online book log?
1. Log into your online account
2. On the welcome page, click Reading Program Student Log (the sixth option)
3. If you have more than one student, select one to work on (top right corner)
4. Search for a book by title or ISBN. Pay attention to the search tips on the right sidebar!
5. Rate the book from 1-5 stars. Click "Add to log."
6. To remove a book from your log, click the red x in the corner of the title.
What if my copy of a book has a different page count than any listed on your website?
If you've entered the ISBN and found a book, please let us know so we can correct the entry. If you've simply entered a title, please pick the version we've included on the list, or if there are multiple versions choose the closest page count to the book you have.
Is there a printable progress chart my kid can fill out?
Yes! If your kid wants to fill out a physical chart they can use this PDF. However, you must enter all books read into the online book log in order to claim your prize. If you can't access the book log, give us a call at 503.655.1951 during business hours or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org by August 30th.
If the Outside of a Dog PDF is the 2014 reading list, where is the 2016 list?
The year our website serves as the 2016 reading list. We've increased it to about 80-90 titles per grade. You can still use the 2014 PDF or the 2013 physical copy if you wish. We're hoping to do a new printing sometime in the next year. If you want to know how you can help with that, take a look at our sponsorship page.
How can I find a series book in the book log search engine?
Try searching by number instead of title! We've completed the lists for Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Sugar Creek Gang and others. We're really close on series like the Boxcar Children & Magic Tree House. If you can't find a title in the logs, try searching on the main site and then copy & paste the ISBN. If you still can't find it, let us know and we'll be glad to help.
How can I access free books online?
For those of you who are international or have difficulty in accessing a library, here are some of our favorite sources for free books online. We'd love to hear from you if you have other ideas!
When is the prize drawing? Can I get my prize sooner?

Students who complete the hardest level of our genre challenge are also eligible to win more prizes.
