The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

This book is not so much a detailed Life of Robespierre or a History of the French Revolution, as an attempt to explain each in terms of the other, and to bring out the permanent, and therefore modern, significance of both: the Revolution as the seed-bed of nineteenth century democracy and socialism, Robespierre as a prophet of the Welfare State and a moral idealist who sacrificed his life (and others') to the dream of a Republic of Virtue.
