John H. Gerstner

John H. Gerstner

John Gerstner was born in Tampa, Florida, in 1914. He graduated from Westminster College with a B.A. before continuing on to earn a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Theology degree from Westminster Theological Seminary as well as a Ph. D from Harvard University. Well-trained, Gerstner served as a pastor to various churches before agreeing to teach at Pittsburgh-Xenia theological seminary. For over 30 years, he taught church history there.

Lecturer and author, Gerstner was an acclaimed authority on Jonathan Edwards' life and theology. His literary masterpiece was a set of three volumes called The Rational Biblical Theology of Jonathan Edwards. Primitive Theology is a collection of Gerstner's prior writings.
