Frederick Benjamin Gipson was born in 1908 on a Texas farm. Growing up, he worked in farming and ranching before enrolling at the University of Texas. Journalism intrigued him so he wrote for The Daily Texan and The Ranger and left college before graduating in order to pursue a career in newspaper reporting.
Gipson then turned to writing short western stories. These lead him to longer works of fiction, including his Newbery Honor book Old Yeller which Walt Disney Studios made into a feature-length film in 1957. Such popularity resulted in Gipson writing a sequel in 1962 called Savage Sam.
A winner of various awards such as the William Allen White Award, the first Sequoyah Award, the Television-Radio Annual Writers Award, and the Northwest Pacific Award, Gipson's talent was recognized worldwide. His books have been translated into Danish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.
