After driving down to Sacramento on Friday, we went to see San
Francisco on Saturday. Eli and I are standing by the San
Francisco Bay in front of Alcatraz. |
Our hosts: David and Sally Stoos, and their baby, Sam. |
This is where the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge is supposed
to be, but, as you can see, all we got to behold was a fog bank.
We drove across this modest bridge on the way into the city and we
couldn't even see the top, it was so foggy. |
In an obscure part of the world, one sea lion said to another:
"Dude, lets go to Pier 39 in San Francisco where we can lay around
on the docks and have tourists take pictures of us."
"I don't know if I could handle a public life," the other replied.
"Oh, come on, man! It's the life of luxury! No more
hunting or swimming... All we have to do is bark once in a while and
nod to our adoring fans. We'll be famous!" |
The crowds gather...
"Dude, they're lovin' us!"
"Move over, you're hogging the dock." |
"Mommy, when I grow up I want to lay
around on a dock and be famous even though I stink," says Sam.
Sally replies, "Well, it is more glamorous than flipping
burgers." |
After oohing and awing over Alcatraz, straining our eyes for any
glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge, and poking fun at the sea lions
(they really did stink... badly), we walked off to see what else
this city had to offer. |
We got to enjoy the experience of riding the trolley car across
town.
By the way, Sam was such a trooper the whole day. He caught a
couple of snoozes in his parents' arms, only had to be changed
twice, and never broke a main spring. Good parenting, Sally
and David! |

Eli rode on the running board right up front and took these
pictures. You don't really get the feel for just how steep
these hills were. It was quite an exciting experience. |
Can the trolley car make it through the traffic in the streets of
San Francisco? Eli and those on the running board had to be
careful not to get crushed by passing cars, or other people on
trolleys going the other direction. |
After walking around down town, we rode the trolley back to the part
of town by the bay in search of a restaurant at which to eat dinner.
The tourists were still taking pictures of those lazy, smelly
sea lions! |
In the evening, the shy Golden Gate Bridge finally let us get a
glimpse of her beauty. She was quite lovely in the sunset
light. |
We ate a delicious dinner at "Swiss Louis", a seafood and Italian
place on Pier 39. The food was good, we had excellent service,
and our table afforded a lovely view of the city at sunset.
After our meal we went to the original Ghirardelli chocolate
factory, now made into an ice cream shop and shopping square.
The ice cream was delicious and was a perfect end to a delightful
day. |
