Early in 2007, we tried something radical: we put our television
in the closet to see if we could make better use of our time.
While that move helped break us of a bad habit, it didn't last
too long! Since then, our daughter Lucy was born, and
through the early months of her life we let ourselves go
brain-dead and went back to watching too many movies (a comfort
and a curse). One night, we finished dinner and had but to
open the door to the basement for Joshua to exclaim (in his
endearing dialect), "Movie, movie? Monk?"
Besides Lucy's birth, we also moved from
an apartment to a house, which means we have new opportunities
and responsibilities. We're happy to say that we can now
keep our television in a more remote spot (the basement den); we
have an enjoyable neighborhood to explore; we are very happy to
finally have our piano accessible; we have the space to pull out
and leave out
things like puzzles or art materials; and we now have a yard (with
its accompanying yard work). But we still hope to do a
fair amount of reading in 2008, separately, together as a
couple, and to our children - especially Joshua (we'd rather he
didn't become a "cheese head").
The list below is the beginning of what we'd like to read in
2008, but we'd also like to keep ourselves more accountable.
So we're listing the movies we've watched too. Hopefully
making that public shames us into watching fewer of them!
