At fourteen Elli Sara learns she is not the granddaughter of Jussa and Kirsti, the Lapp couple she has always known, but the daughter of a wealthy Finn who now wants her with him. Curious about a father (she was told her parents were dead), she nevertheless refuses to leave ""brother"" Johan to watch the reindeer herds alone. Forcibly taken away by a sheriff and constable, she escapes to Johan and Kirsti, pursued by the law enforcers over ice and snow. Caught, she agreed to look after the injured sheriff while the other goes for medical help, but she also insists on staying with the Saras. After shared dangers, the sheriff reveals himself as her father and she agrees to go with him with the understanding that she can learn to be a nurse and come back to help the nomadic Lapps.
