Players are recent immigrants to the newly populated island of Catan. Expand your colony through the building of settlements, roads, and villages by harvesting commodities from the land around you. Trade wool, lumber, bricks and grain for a settlement, bricks and wood for a road, or try to complete other combinations for more advanced buildings, services and specials.

In The Settlers of Catan you control a group of settlers trying to tame the wilds on the remote but rich isle of Catan. Start by revealing the wilds on the remote but rich isle of Catan. Start by revealing Catan's many harbors and regions: plains, meadows, mountains, hills, forests & desert. The random mix creates a different board virtually every game.

Embark on a quest to settle the isle of Catan! Guide your settlers to victory by clever trading and cunning development. Acquire your resources through trades or lucky dice. But beware! Someone might cut off your road or buy a monopoly! And you never know when the wily robber might steal away with your precious gains!

Trade with other players, or at local seaports to get resources you might lack. The first player to achieve 10 points from a combination of roads, settlements, and special cards wins.

  Fun for Adults and Kids

This is a very simple game to learn to play and requires no reading. Even our four year old can play without help. The fact that there is strategy involved makes it challenging enough for older kids and adults to enjoy, but the fact that there is a lot of chance involved gives younger kids an opportunity of winning. If you are a family with kids of various ages and you are looking for a game that everyone can play and enjoy together, then this is a great choice. If you are a large family you can get an extension pack to increase the number of players from four to six.

This was the game that introduced me to Eurogames, but I hardly play it anymore. Luck of the die can be annoying, and for game length there are almost always other things I'd rather be playing. Not a _bad_ game by any stretch of the imagination, but its strength is in introducing players to the mechanics and feel of Eurogames and weaning them from Monopoly and Risk.

If you've never played this type of game, this one is a great introduction to a vast world of superior games!
