This five volume set, published by Oxford University from 1954-1958, is a history of technology from the dawn of history to the late 19th century. It has a secular perspective of early times with an evolutionary slant on the stone age, but overall it's a fascinating series covering so many technologies. Each volume is about 700-900 pages with 35-80 b/w photographic plates. This is a fantastic resource if you want to write historical fiction!

  • Volume I: From Early Times to Fall of Ancient Empires
  • Volume II: The Mediterranean Civilizations and the Middle Ages
  • Volume III: From the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution
  • Volume IV: The Industrial Revolution
  • Volume V: The Late Nineteenth Century
