You could argue that creating a vegetable garden in France is more fairy tale than real life, but in an attempt to escape the craziness of NYC, Richard Goodman did just that and chronicled his gloriously unfrenzied life for a year in the Avignon countryside. The resulting book, French Dirt, is a reflection on tilling the soil, being quiet, and the ugly and beautiful people he met and got to know. A veteran essayist, Goodman's prose is elegant and brief, making this an excellent choice for winding down and finding your own peace and quiet even if you can't afford to move to France.
