Based on Isaac Johnson's own account in Slavery Days in Old Kentucky, this book is a personal story of the cruelty & inhumanity experienced by many slaves. Isaac Johnson was sold into slavery by his own father (a white man who fathered several children by Isaac's mother, a slave). After one attempt to run away, Johnson was beaten & watched others being tortured & killed. Later, he did escape & served in the Union Army. After the war, he settled in Canada, where his stonecutting & masonry work can still be seen today. This is fascinating reading & will encourage students to look for more information about slavery, the Civil War, & Reconstruction. Chronology, bibliography, & index.
