A Good Wake-up Call, But Weak On Application.
Eli Evans of Exodus Books, 5/1/2009
I just finished this book and found it to be a very cogent read. While I don't agree with the author's view of the end-times, which he subtly refers to, I was pleasantly surprised to see that he did not really make that a part of his case, instead sticking to facts and (what seems to me) common sense. And I think he is making an important argument--it's time we wake up to the fact the American government isn't our savior!

The book begins with a brief review of basic economics, where Robinson defines terms and explains fiat currency in an easy-to-understand way. He goes on to show, historically, that fiat currencies have never succeeded, begging the question: what makes America any different? His argument is that IT ISN'T, and that we're primed for an economic downturn of major proportions.

His reasons? Well, first, America is now the greatest debtor nation in history. We have borrowed more than we can repay (without significant sacrifice) and seem to believe we can only get out of debt by borrowing more; eventually this will catch up to us.

Second, much of our present prosperity is based on the petro-dollar system. The author demonstrates the difference between cheap oil and peak oil, discusses the rising economies and demand for oil from other countries, and then asks the question: if our dollar is worthless, why do most of the countries selling oil continue to use it? Eventually, they will switch to a currency that is backed by more than consumer confidence.

Third, fractional reserve banking is a scam. By "creating money" out of thin air, the banks have set themselves up for a fall. Eventually, loans have to be repaid.

Robinson believes that "eventually" may be sooner than later and, of course, makes his case much more fully and clearly than my little review can do. I think he does an excellent job interpreting trends, and expect many of his predictions--not prophecies!--to be fairly accurate.

My beef with this book has probably more to do with publisher marketing than with the author. On the front of the book, it looks like the subtitle is "12 Key Strategies for Protecting Your Finances in Uncertain Times." But this is just one chapter of his book, and it's a short chapter. Of the twelve "strategies," about half are very relevant and good; none are especially unique.

Don't buy this book as an investment aid--you'll be disappointed. It is, rather, a good wake-up call for those of us with our heads in the sand.
