Horton meant what he said when he promised the lazy Mayzie bird he’d watch her egg. Despite rains storms, snow storms, and even being sold to a circus and laughed at by both animals and people, Horton remains true to his word and sits on the egg through it all. The good-for-nothing Mayzie bird returns for her egg right when it’s about to hatch, and it looks as though all poor Horton’s work will go unappreciated. But when the egg hatches, what should come out but a very extraordinary bird with ears, trunk, and a tail just like Horton’s!

  Horton, the Egg Sitter

I really like this book. The mother bird was going on vacation and asked Horton to sit on her egg and watch it. He stayed on the nest until the mother would come back. Horton even went to a parade while he was sitting on the egg! Then the mother came to the parade and saw Horton. Then the egg cracked. Then the bird came out with a tail like Horton's, ears like Horton's and a trunk like Horton's! Then the mother was so mad.

My aunt had one of these at her house, and read it to use every time we visited, or so it seemed. The Horton books are one of several mini series within the Seuss books. They're truly the classics of read-aloud literature. The colors are retro and very cool. And the moral of the story is sweet and pro-life (okay, pro-pregnant-lady). Its not as cool as Horton hears a Who, but its still quite worth your while.
