  A Gentle Reading Program

This lerning to read program is written by Rebecca Avery, the author of the Weaver curriculum. Ms. Avery believed in hands-on learning, and so those ideas are carried over into her reading program. There are three sections in the program. The first section is reading readiness. I have never seen such an excellent readiness program. It's not the usual worsksheets and such, the binder is filled with ideas for the child to do, tongue exerises and games, no written activities. There is also an exercise tape which instructs the child to move in certain ways. Once the readiness activitities are completed, parents can use the checklist to ensure the child is indeed ready to read. The next section involves teaching the alphabet in a fun way. A puppet is made for each letter and a song is learned too. After the letters are learned the child learns to blend, and the Bible Story books by QUishenberry are used. The final section involves learning to read, beginning with simle phonetic rules, taught with music, progressing slowly. There are some sight words. This program does not involve writing, which makes it a unique and refreshing change to worksheets.
