An advocate of the classical education approach, James Stobaugh's aim is not merely to promote the reading and understanding of literature, but to provide students with the broadly applicableskills of rehetoric and critical thinking. The study of literature naturally lends itself to the development of such skills, so he has developed a curriculum to guide them through several of the great works of the Western literary canon, reading and evaluating each one in light of a Christian worldview.

How Do These Work?

Designed for middle school and early high school students, Skills for Literary Analysis addresses well-known classics such as Tom Sawyer and Call of the Wild, as well as others less familiar, like How Green Was My Valley. Students read the required text, discuss the material with their parent or teacher, and generally complete a written assignment. Written work is generally a one-page essay about the theme of the reading assignment, as well as a daily prayer journal that doesn't relate specifically to the reading but is highly encouraged by the author.

There are 35 lessons in all, to be used during the course of one year, though the program could easily be spread over a longer period. The teacher edition contains a weekly plan for each lesson centered around a key text. The main element students are taught to identify in any work is the theme—what the story means, the writer's worldview, how the writer convey's that worldview, etc.
