This manual is a complete year's course in oral language for young children. It is for parents who are teaching their children at home, and may also be used by classroom teachers as a source of lesson ideas. The book is comprised of a series of eight units showing how to teach not only in sit-down tutoring situations but in the real-life of mealtimes, grocery trips and other occasions. Mrs. Beechick assures parents that you don't need to feel guilty if the learning is informal—in fact, she states that classroom teachers try to simulate real-life whenever they can so there's no reason to waste time imitating the classroom.
Each unit begins with a set of objectives and says how long it should take to teach the skill, along with directions for the given topic.Teaching tips, questions to ask, and activities to do are all offered. An evaluation section,which sometimes include record sheets for the teacher,follows. The schedule for each unit is flexible, allowing you to spend as much time as needed per skill and to jump around if desired.
The units are quite diverse and include plenty of very practical skills, such as telling and reading stories, vocabulary and thinking skills, listening to and following directions, memorizing personal information and Scripture, using a calendar, using a phone (this is a little dated), learning on field trips, developing manners,and enjoying poetry. This is an excellent resource, primarily meant for kindergarten and first grade children, although it can be adapted for both younger and older students.
