A Wisconsin native, Roop was born on June 18, 1951. She loved to explore, read, and satisfy her tremendous curiosity. After attending Lawrence University in order to be a doctor, Roop changed her mind and wanted to study geology. With her education, she determined to pass along her enthusiasm and knowledge to children, which led her into teaching science to junior high students. Roop later earned a master's degree in science teaching from Boston College. To take a break from scientific journals, Roop began reading children's books. Her husband was earning his master's degree in children's literature at that time, and Roop began using children's books in her science curriculum.
Reading led to writing, and Roop penned articles for educational journals and worked for
Appraisal magazine. Once she and her husband tackled a writing project that ended up as a series of six riddle and joke books, the Roops never looked back. Roop continued as a high school environmental teacher in the Appleton Area School District and earned educational awards for her excellence in her profession. As a writer she received recognition and awards as well. With her husband she has penned over 100 fiction and nonfiction books for children and has presented over 800 workshops to benefit writers, students, and teachers throughout 26 states. Roop's commitment to diligent research and authenticity have helped make her work well-read and enjoyed by children and adults alike.
