As your child graduates from middle school to high school, so do the Sonlight Cores. Core 100 is the first in Sonlight’s high school program: a deeper, more thought-provoking, exciting journey into American history. Students build on basic knowledge they’ve obtained in previous Cores and delve into the thoughts, struggles, and the complexities of American history.
The foundation for this year of high school American history is the award-winning A History of US by Joy Hakim. Though easy and fun to read, this series nevertheless contains enough detail and information to be a comprehensive, exciting textbook for high school students. Though this series is somewhat liberal, it is balanced out by the extensive notes and discussion questions in the Instructor’s Guide. Core 100 is dedicated to making sure your child can think critically and maintain a Christian worldview while studying history. Rounding out your history education is a collection of American literature, biographies, and other books that bring real-life perspective to the history you child is studying. From essential classics like To Kill a Mocking Bird and Call of the Wild to the lives of important figures like Sacajawea and James Madison, Core 100’s American Literature selection is both challenging and enjoyable, and ensures that your child receives an in-depth look at the American culture.
Along with American Literature is a series of books like Evidence for Jesus and Why Pray that help develop your child’s faith and worldview. Core 100 also includes a Bible study program, which includes memory verse suggestions and practical lessons in application, and a complete language arts program that further develops your child’s writing and critical thinking skills. The new and Improved Instructor’s Guide helps you teach these books in a stress-free, personalized way. With Sonlight Core 100, your child’s first year of high school history will be one that is both academically challenging and highly enjoyable.
Please Note: Sonlight Curriculum does not sell their materials to Exodus Books. We carry many of the same titles, and are often able to obtain used copies of books they publish. The following is culled from their 2013 website and includes much of their selection, though it is not comprehensive, nor is it in any sort of curricular order. For a complete listing, visit the Sonlight Curriculum website.
