Liturgical culture drives all other expressions of culture. The culture we exhibit in the presence of our gods is the defining element of every culture. Christian reformation of culture encompasses all that is true, all that is good, and all that is lovely. It affects how we prepare our meals, and how we serve them. It affects the making of beer and the mowing of lawns. But at the center of all this is how reformation affects the public worship of God, and this is obviously related to the music we sing.

The saints of the last two millennia have added their voices to the heavenly chorus, and their music is our inheritance. Some of this inheritance stretches modern ears. It delights in the glories of musical aesthetic depth. With Cantus Christi, we endeavor to recover a small portion of that great heritage.

  A Meaty Hymnal
Hymnal Man of Oregon, 4/6/2011
This is a tough hymnal to get comfortable with, but well worth the effort! If you are looking to improve what you sing, and you are really serious about it, this is the hymnal you should get.
The first section of the hymnal is full of Psalms from throughout Church history. The majority of these will be unfamiliar to most people, but very worthwhile to learn. There are a few chants/Psalms tones, a lot of Genevan Psalms from John Calvin's Psalter, some Scottish Psalms, some from the more recent Book of Psalms for Singing, and even some brand new through-composed Psalms by living composers (excellent stuff!). The Psalter section is not complete, but contains about 1/2 of the 150 Psalms. It has some duplicates of some of the "popular" Psalms like 23, 100 etc.
The middle portion contains hymns organized first by Church year, then by general topic. You will find many standards (A Mighty Fortress, And Can it Be, Now Thank We All Our God), but much less of Fanny Crosby, and other 19th century American hymnody that makes up the majority of hymnals today. This section will introduce you to many hymns of the Church you have never heard before but are part of our rich heritage of worship music.
The last section is devoted to "Service Music," including Creeds, and ancient church songs like the Te Deum, Sanctus, Nunc Dimittis and Doxologies. This section is most helpful for churches, but could he used in the home as well.
I own more than 30 hymnals, and this one is my favorite, primarily because of the selection of Psalms. I'm pretty sure this contains the widest variety of Psalms you will find in any one hymnal. The format is clean and very readable. My one complaint is that its printed on stout paper, which makes for a very heavy hymnal, which is not very fun to sing out of for very long. The heaviness also tends to wear on the binding after a while. The theological and musical introductions by Douglas Wilson and Louis Schuler and excellent as well.
My favorite hymnal. I highly recommend if you are looking for something to help you or your church grow in musical worship!
