It's hard to tell whether Barrel of Monkeys would have been as popular if the Beach Boys hadn't immortalized it in a song about a motorcycle. At this stage it probably doesn't matter—everyone knows the game, and plenty of people love it.

All you have to do is pull as many monkeys out of the barrel as possible using only their arms to pull them out. But you don't get to pull them out one-by-one or arm-by-arm—the only acceptable method of monkey retrieval is by holding onto the first one and manipulating him to get the subsequent monkeys out in a single long chain of bright red monkeyness.

Sounds crazy, no? Yes. It is crazy, but it makes a whole lot better babysitter than the television. We aren't necessarily suggesting parents play this game, but kiddos love it, and it's just the kind of thing with the potential to keep them occuppied and (relatively) quiet for hours on end.

C. Hollis Crossman used to be a child. Now he is a husband and father, teaches adult Sunday school in his Presbyterian congregation, and likes weird stuff. He might be a mythical creature, but he's definitely not a centaur. Read more of his reviews here.

  Never Quite Got It
Sincerelyornot of Oregon, 11/21/2011
I never quite got this game. Its hard to finish... like monopoly, its easy to get stuck on that last few monkeys that will not line up.

The basic game involves trying to pull all the moneys out of the barrel while touching only the first monkey. Also, if you have a timekeeper, its a barrel of fun to take turns trying to empty the barrel in under three minutes, one minute, etc.

Plenty of people love it, since its a simple, portable kids game that can't really lose its essential pieces. A great stocking-stuffer, especially for Grandmas, whose grandchildren will enjoy the game all the way home (while their parents enjoy some respite from "are we there yet?").
