William F. Russell

William F. Russell

On November 4, 1945 in Illinois, Russell was born to parents Harley and Eleanor.  Educated at Ohio Wesleyan University, Russell earned his bachelor's degree before attending Northern Illinois University to receive his master's and doctorate degrees in education.  Using what he'd learned, he worked as a high school English teacher and then went to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. as an editor.  It was while he was doing his doctorate studies that he came across the idea of making classical literature accessible to both parents and their children.  This led to the Read Aloud Classics books which retold Greek and Roman myths, legends, and short stories from the Western world.  An educator, author, and lecturer, Russell travels to talk about language and how to help children achieve learning success at home and in school.

Dr. Russell continues to urge parents, teachers, and policy-makers to see family-centered, out-of-school learning as a solution to the crises in education today. He encourages everyone to join him in posting and exchanging written and video home-learning activities on the website of The Family Learning Exchange www.familylearningexchange.net.
