Fairy tales, for most children, are the classic and well-loved stories of Hans Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. Fables conjure up the charming short stories written long ago by the Greek Aesop, or the fabulous, wise, animal stories of Rudyard Kipling.

In this book the best work of all these writers has been charmingly and sympathetically re-told by Robert Mathias, so that the full flavour of the original tales is retained.

Some stories are sad and moving like The Little Match Girl and The Little Mermaid. Some, like the wry tale The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo are humorous while others like the classic tales Snow White and Hansel and Gretel will cause a delicious shiver down the spine.

Interspersed amongst the longer stories are Aesop's inimitable fables, whose messages, seen through the antics of his animal characters, are as true today as they ever were.

The book is superbly illustrated throughout by stunningly evocative illustrations by some of today's finest artists.

PLEASE NOTE: Three stories' (Little Mermaid, Emperor's New Clothes and How the Leopard Got His Spots) illustrations include innocuous nudity.
